First known as Mark Belt, Pearland was platted and renamed in 1894 to reflect the abundance of pear orchards in the vicinity. Today, Pearland is a residential community and home to many master-planned developments. With low crime and a small-town town atmosphere, the city has been ranked in Forbes Magazine as one of the fastest growing suburbs in the nation. A majority of Pearland’s workforce commute to the Texas Medical Center, NASA, and other employment hubs in the area.
 
Pearland Independent School District is the predominant school district in Pearland, but Alvin, Fort Bend, Houston, and Pasadena independent school districts also serve portions of the city. Several local private and parochial schools serve Pearland, and Houston’s Awty School, Saint Thomas’ Episcopal School, and Saint Thomas High School provide bus services for Pearland students. Higher education campuses include Alvin Community College, San Jacinto College, Houston Community College, and University of Houston-Clear Lake.
