Clear Lake and Friendswood are two distinct cities that, combined, form the core of Houston’s Bay Area suburbs. Separated by Interstate-45 as it travels south to Galveston Island, the two cities were both developed by Friendswood Development Corporation and offer a variety of housing and recreational activities.

Clear Lake City, positioned along the shores of Clear Lake, was annexed by Houston in 1977 and, by 1988, led the Houston area in the sale of new, single-family homes. Its primary employer is NASA and the aerospace industry with significant contributions by retail business, recreation, tourism, and the new Bayport facility.

The Lakewood Yacht Club hosts the Texas Concours d’Elegance Keels and Wheels classic car and boat show, the largest of its class in the United States, annually on the first weekend in May. Other local events include the Clear Lake Spring Fling and Boating Festival, the Blessing of the Fleet, and the Greek Festival. Armand Bayou Nature Center is also a popular attraction.

Friendswood’s industries include aerospace and defense, software and computing, biotechnology, computer equipment, electronics, communication services and the chemical industry. Home sites include acreage tracts, subdivision lots and water frontage in older subdivisions; master-planned and gated communities; and communities that cater to senior and assisted living. The city has a highly educated, affluent resident base and an outstanding public school system served by the Friendswood and Clear Creek Independent School Districts Several community colleges, four-year universities, and graduate schools also serve Friendswood.
